The basics

What is IT Playbook?

A catalogue of IT courses that work like narrated books: read, listen or both, with live diagrams, a quiz on every lesson and a flashcard deck for every course. One membership unlocks all of them. See What it is.

Who are the courses for?

Anyone learning the technology that runs modern software, from a first step into IT to closing a specific gap. Beginner courses start from zero, and every course's Introduction says what you should know first. See Who it is for.

Which courses are there?

Browse the catalogue on the home page, or All courses on your dashboard once you are signed in. New courses are added every month. See The catalogue.

How do I find the right course for me?

Search the catalogue and sort it by Most popular, Newest, Beginner first or A-Z. Signed in, fill in your Learning profile and your dashboard adds a Recommended sort and Paths, which lists the courses for the role you want in order. See Paths.

How long does a course take?

Each course card shows an estimate, such as ≈8.5h. It covers the whole course: the narration, plus the time to answer every quiz and work through the flashcard deck. See Reading a course card.

Are the courses kept up to date?

Yes. Once a month every course is checked against the official documentation and corrected where the tools have changed. The chip on each card says Updated, Verified or Created with a month. See Kept current.

Do you use AI to write the courses?

Yes. AI agents help draft the courses and keep them current, and AI voices narrate them, but every change is reviewed by a human before it ships. See About the AI.

Free and paid

Can I try a course without paying?

Yes, with no account: the Introduction, the whole first chapter, every chapter Overview and the first lesson of chapters 2 and 3 are free in every course. See What is free.

What is the free course of the month?

Each month one beginner course is free in full, flashcards included, for anyone who signs in. No card is needed. Look for the banner and the Free in badge on its card. See Free course of the month.

Why is a lesson locked?

Every page outside the free ones is part of the membership. A locked lesson opens with a card that names it and shows the way to unlock it, plus a free lesson you can read instead, and its narration does not play. See Locked pages.

Are the flashcards free?

The flashcard trainer is part of the membership. It is also open in the free course of the month once you are signed in. See Opening the trainer.

How much does it cost?

One membership, monthly or yearly, unlocks every course, and new courses are included as they launch. In the apps, the store shows the price for your country. See One membership.

How do I cancel?

Cancel where you subscribed: a website subscription in Settings, Subscription & billing; an App Store subscription in your Apple Account; a Google Play subscription in the Play Store. See Managing or cancelling.

What happens after I cancel?

You keep full access until the end of the period you paid for, then your account goes back to the free pages. Your progress, streak, medals and certificates stay. See After you cancel.

Can I get a refund?

Payments are non-refundable except where the law requires, and a part of a period is not refunded. For a purchase made through the App Store or Google Play, ask the store. See Refunds.

I subscribed, but another device does not show it.

The membership belongs to your IT Playbook account, wherever you bought it. Sign in with the same Google or Apple account you subscribed with. In the apps, Already subscribed? Restore picks up a store purchase. See Restoring a purchase.

My payment failed. What now?

For a website subscription, Settings, Subscription & billing shows Payment problem with a button to fix it, and your access continues while the payment is retried. For an App Store or Google Play subscription, update the payment method in the store. See Payment problems.

Learning

Do I need an account?

Not for the free pages: quizzes and progress work signed out and stay in that browser. Signing in is free and adds your dashboard, your streak and the Settings page, and your progress then follows you to every device. See Signing in.

Can I sign in with an email and password?

No. You sign in with Google or Apple, and the first sign-in creates your account. You can add the other one later in Settings, Profile, Sign-in methods. See Adding Apple or Google later.

How do I use the figures with sliders and buttons?

They are live figures: move a slider, tap an option or press Play and the figure works out what happens. On the website, from the keyboard, use Tab to reach a control and Enter to press it, because Space plays or pauses the narration. See Live figures.

Why did my quiz not count?

A quiz counts as passed only when every answer is right in one attempt. Press Try Again to start over with the options reshuffled. Answers are not saved halfway, so a reload starts the quiz again. See The Knowledge Check.

Why does the audio bar say Tap to start?

Phones, tablets and some browsers do not let a page play sound until you touch it. Tap or click anywhere on the page and the narration starts. See Tap to start on phones.

Why does the narration stop when I switch tabs?

Play in background is off by default, so the narration pauses when the page is out of sight. Switch it on in Player settings to keep listening. See Play in background.

How do I start the narration of a page again?

Click the lesson title or the first paragraph. Clicking any paragraph moves the narration there. See Starting a page again.

Can I slow the narration down or add pauses?

Yes. In Player settings, Speed goes from 0.7× to 1.5× and Pause adds up to 10 seconds of silence after each sentence. Your choice is kept for every course. See Voice, speed and pause.

Which voices are there?

Two, Female and Male; the default is Male. Switch any time in Player settings, or turn on Read twice to hear each paragraph again, read by the Secondary voice. See Voice.

Can I skip the side boxes when listening?

Yes. Skip reading in Player settings leaves comparisons, common mistakes, best practices or why-it-matters boxes out of the narration. The boxes stay on the page. See Skip reading.

Can the narration wait while I read a definition?

Yes. Switch on Pause on definitions in Player settings, or Pause on definition popups in Settings, Audio playback defaults. It is off by default. See Pausing for definitions.

How do the flashcards work?

Turn a card over, then say honestly whether you knew it. A spaced-repetition schedule brings missed cards back soon and known ones further out each time. See What the trainer is.

Can I answer flashcards out loud?

Yes: switch on Answer aloud in Settings, Flashcards. It works on the website in Chrome, Edge and Safari, and in the iPhone, iPad and Android apps. See Answer aloud.

Progress

What do Learned, Quizzes and Flashcards mean?

Learned counts lessons whose narration you have heard in full, Quizzes the lessons whose quiz you have passed, and Flashcards how much of the course's deck you know now. See Learned, Quizzes and Flashcards.

I read the whole lesson. Why is it not Learned?

Learned counts listening only: every sentence on the page has to play to its end at least once, over one visit or several. Reading without playing the narration is not tracked. See Listened in full.

Do I have to listen to finish a course?

No. A course is finished when every quiz is passed and every flashcard is known. Read or listen, whichever suits you. See Medals.

How do the daily goal and streak work?

The daily goal has two halves: quizzes passed (1 lesson by default) and flashcards answered (10 by default). A day counts toward your streak only when both are met. Changing the goal applies from that day on; earlier days keep the goal they had. See Daily goal.

What is a streak freeze?

Cover for a day you miss. You earn the first after 7 days of meeting your daily goal, hold up to 14, and one is spent automatically for each missed day. See Streak freezes.

Can I take a course again from scratch?

Yes. Reset progress at the bottom of the course's sidebar clears its ticks, quiz results, listened-in-full marks and your place, and can reset its flashcards too. Your streak, medal and certificate stay. See Starting a course again.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. Finish a course and a medal appears under Achievements on your dashboard; click it to open your certificate. It has its own link that anyone can open, and a button to print it or save it as a PDF. See Certificates.

What name appears on my certificate?

The display name in Settings, Profile. Change it, open the certificate again from the medal, and it shows the new name at the same link. See Profile.

A course is missing from my dashboard. How do I add it?

A course appears on your dashboard once you pass one of its quizzes or listen to one of its pages in full, or when you add it from Paths. A course you removed comes back the same way. See Removing a course.

Devices and apps

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer, and there is an app for iPhone and iPad on the App Store. See Getting the apps.

Is there an Android app?

It is not on Google Play yet. Until it is, use the website in your phone's browser: your account and progress are the same. See Getting the apps.

Can I learn offline?

In the apps, yes: Download for offline on a course's screen stores its lessons and narration on the device. It is offered for courses you have full access to, and a download is removed after 7 days without opening the course unless you change that. See Offline downloads.

Does my progress follow me between devices?

Yes, when you are signed in: progress, flashcard decks, streak and almost every setting follow your account. A few choices, such as Card size, stay on each device. See What follows your account.

Where are the settings?

Signed in, open the menu under your name at the top of the page and choose Settings. In the apps, Settings is on the Account tab. Player settings in the audio bar change the same values while you listen. See Settings.

Getting help

How do I contact you?

Signed in, use the Support form, free or paid: pick a topic, write up to 500 characters, and the reply comes by email. Anyone can also write to support@itplaybook.org. In the apps, Support is on the Account tab.

I found a mistake in a lesson. Where do I report it?

Please send it through Support with the topic Course content, and say which course and lesson. Ideas for new courses are welcome the same way.

Which emails will I get?

A few account emails arrive on their own: a welcome, a note when a subscription starts or is cancelled, and a link when you earn a certificate. Study reminders come only if you switch them on in Settings, Notifications. See Emails you always get.

How do I delete my account?

In Settings, Profile, follow Delete it yourself, type DELETE and confirm. Cancel any running subscription first, or the page will refuse. See Deleting your account.
