Chapter Ten · The Bigger Picture

Chapter 10: The Bigger Picture

So far the course has stayed close to one person and one screen. This last chapter zooms out. It separates two words that get blurred — privacy and security — looks at why protecting data is a shared job rather than one team's chore, explains the rules society has written about data, and then points at where the next course begins.

Up to now the lens has been tight: Olivia, her accounts, her passwords, the attacks that target her and the defenses that protect her. That close view was the right place to learn the ideas. But Olivia's data does not stay with Olivia — it sits on the systems of the companies she uses, and those companies sit inside rules made by governments and industries. This chapter steps back to take in that whole picture.

Four topics make the zoom-out. First, the difference between privacy and security, which sound the same and are not. Then why security is everyone's job, not a thing handed to one team. Then why data has rules at all — the laws and standards with the alphabet-soup names. And finally a look back over the ten chapters, and a signpost to the deep-dive course that turns this understanding into hands-on practice.

The course closes by zooming out — from one person to the rules around the data, and on to the next course
